You’ll hardly notice Belton in the confusing mass of urbanity around I-35 between Killeen and Temple. Belton began as a small Texas Ranger fort in 1836, but its early growth was a result of its location on the Chisholm Trail cattle drives and the stagecoach route from Austin to Dallas. If you’re adding courses to your golf resume, Leon Valley in Belton is one to consider when traveling between Dallas and Austin.

Order a chicken-fried steak at the Classic Cafe (512-939-3995) in an old 1891 downtown building, then cruise by the Old Stone Jail on Pearl where nine horse thieves were shot by an angry mob in 1874. For overnight accommodations, seek the Best Western (512-939-5711) on 6th or the Belle of Belton B&B (512-939-6478), an 1893 restored mansion that might work better than the motels.
