The town of “Burn-it,” due west of Lake Buchanan on US 281, grew up around the frontier Fort Croghan in the 1850s and is known for the famous bluebonnet fields and geological outcroppings that dot the countryside. The Bluebonnet Capital of Texas, as designated by the 67th Texas Legislature, also boasts an 18-hole championship layout that is one of the best bargains in Texas.

Find tasty BBQ at Burnet Country Bar-B-Que on Hwy 29 West, or dig in for chicken-fried steak at the Riverwalk Cafe. The restless can do some scenic driving and cruise Texas 29 west or RM 2341 northwest to see panoramic landscape views near the confluence of the Llano and Colorado Rivers. Or enjoy the drive to Spider Mountain, which according to legend was an Indian burial ground.
