Named after the springs that snake through the layout, Burnet’s municipal course is a scenic links-style track that is one of the better values in Texas golf. The low prices and friendly service, combined with a picturesque and challenging golf course, make this a Hill Country favorite.
Architects Dave Axland and Dan Proctor built a natural-looking course that fits the terrain perfectly. The course is nestled into the rolling hills and oak trees along the Highland Lakes, playing 6,829 yards from the tips. During your round you’ll encounter lush fairways frequently loaded with bunkers, large greens that slope severely, and numerous bump and run shots. The designers added a few original touches, such as the descriptive Scottish names for each hole (the 18th is called “Hame” for the home hole).
Another interesting design twist involved placing the signature hole as the opener. Playing 504 yards to a par 5, No. 1 is best attacked with an iron into the left side of a sloping, tree-lined fairway. The creek cuts into the landing area, making it a testy tee shot. The second shot must bend around the dogleg to the left and over the creek, and the approach is into the green shaded by large trees on the right.
Also note that the grill is famous for its hamburgers, andthe course offers an annual dues option if you visit the area frequently.
Getting there : From Hwy. 29, take Hwy. 281 south for 12 miles. The course entrance is on the right-hand side of the highway.
