Caldwell
Elevation : 406
Population : 3,575
A Czech town formed in the rich Brazos River basin, Caldwell was
named after macho Indian fighter Mathew “Old Paint”
Caldwell, who was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
Located just 26 miles west of College Station, today the “Kolache
Capital of Texas” serves as the primary hub for surrounding
farms and ranches. Golfers who find themselves on a road trip to
Caldwell can partake of the great game at the Copperas Hollow Country
Club.

NOTES
Caldwell is home to an old oak tree, called the Waugh
Campground Oak, which featured political debates back in
the day. Lake Somerville, 18 miles away, is enjoyable
because of the state park and lack of crowds. In town try the Victorian
cottage-style 1891 Kraitchar House for lodging,
andthe Lawyer’s Landing (979-567-3504) is
“an uptown bed and breakfast” worthy of consideration.
