Calvert
Elevation : 335
Population : 1,523
Calvert was once the fourth largest city in Texas, bustling with
hotels, theaters, opera houses, expensive Victorian homes, and a
population exceeding 10,000. Once the railroad came through, plantation
owners made cotton king and displayed their wealth by building spectacular
Victorian mansions in the Brazos River bottoms. Civil War heroes
held reunions in Virginia Field Park, the largest cotton gin in
the world was built, and times were good. Now you can come to Calvert
to take your time, shop for antiques, absorb the history, and play
golf at the 9-hole Calvert Country Club.

NOTES
Calvert has 37 blocks of homes listed on the National Historic
Register. Get to know the town by touring the historic buildings,
particularly the pre-1900 churches that dot the town. The 1872 Calvert
Hotel (979-364-2430) has been restored, a plantation-style country
inn that reeks of the “Old South.”, and features an
outstanding chef for good eats. The best is the Calvert Inn (979-364-2868
), where the honeymoon suite has claw-foot bathtubs in the bedroom
for the true romantic. They say this is the Antique Capital of Texas
so rummage through Cobb’s Market or Rustique on Main Street
for eclectic trinkets. Out front you can grab a pre-round cup of
joe at Mojoe’s Coffee Cart. More food at Somewhere in Time,
open only on the weekends, but the rib-eyes are phenomenal. Every
May, the Maypole Festival brings tourismos for art, blue-grass music,
and fun.
