Cameron
Elevation : 402
Population : 5,951
Historic homes, wonderful restaurants, abundant rivers, lakes,
trees, and wildlife–this tranquil town along the Little River
32 miles southeast of Temple has it all. It is known as the “Dewberry
Capital of Texas”. Imagine the romantic languages of Spanish,
German, and Czech garbled with a Texas drawl, and you’ll have
a sense of the sounds in Cameron. The best place to hear that unique
speak is at the Cameron Country Club, which is open to the public,
easy to play, and friendly to out-of-towners.

NOTES
The 1895 Magnolia House is stunning, with
every piece of lumber supposedly handpicked for authenticity and
quality. And the Milam County Museum is the old
three-story jailhouse that features a tower and hanging room. The
last weekend in April is the Dewberry Festival,
complete with a barbecue cook-off, spirits, and good-times. In October
there is a huge arts & crafts festival. The Cameron Country
Inn B&B (866-697-3160) comes highly recommended. Eat at The
Texan for steaks and burgers, but no beer. The
Rustic Corral off Hwy. 77 serves beer, Tex-Mex and steaks,
and Guadalajara’s is the local authentic
Mexican food joint.
