Canyon Lake
Elevation : 720
Population : 29,000
Long before it became a lake, the Guadalupe River ran through the
land, giving life to the German farms and villages that dotted the
countryside. Once the lake was built in the early 1960s, small communities
named after those immigrants sprang up along the shores of the deep,
clear waters. It’s easy to make a day out of driving around
the lake on the farm roads exploring small communities like Hancock,
Startzville, and Sattler. Fly-fishing is excellent below the dam,
and historic Gruene is just down the road with shopping, tubing,
good eats, legendary live music, and cold beers. Before you go,
though, play some golf at the scenic 18-hole course that overlooks
Canyon Lake.
Canyon Lake Golf Courses :
NOTES
This part of Texas is perfect for scenic back road touring,
especially if your destination is a crusty old dance hall like the
1870 Twin Sisters Hall (830-833-4808), or the beautiful
Kendalia Halle (830-833-4902) in the town of the
same name just south of Blanco. This 94-year-old hall features a
2,000-square- foot hardwood boot-scootin’ floor, an old oak
tree out front where borachos were chained until sobriety returned,
and another big tree out back bent by Indians to mark their routes.
Enjoy the views but watch out for DPS troopers, particularly on
46.
