Copperas Cove is on US 190 between Killeen and Lampasas. In the 1950s, less than 5,000 residents lived here, but the coming of Fort Hood brought growth to the area and the city is now home to more than 30,000 people. Driving west from I-35, the highway is so developed it’s hard to tell the difference among Belton, Killeen, or Copperas Cove. Rural Central Texas looms ahead, but you won’t sense the Hill Country until you’re on the western outskirts of Lampasas.

Try Penni’s BBQ (254-547-6555) or Aaron’s Chopped Beef (254-542-4670) for lunch. If you’re forced to stay, there are a Howard Johnson and Best Western. It’s hard to justify more goings-on in the Cove since random Hill Country adventures are so close by. Consider the side trip northwest of town on FM 1113 to see the countryside, and if the kids are with you be sure to check out the drive-through animal park.
