Flatonia

Elevation : 1,377
Population : 458

Flatonia, a tiny railroad town on I-10 halfway between Houston and San Antonio, is a quiet Czech town known for its blowout Czhilispeil celebration, antique shopping, and quaint bed and breakfasts. While this spot on I-10 is good for a weekend getaway anytime, late October is the best time to visit because of Czhilispeil–the second-largest chili cook-off in Texas. Highlights include the “World’s Largest Tented Biergarten” and live Texas music.

NOTES
Piddle around the 1878 Arnim and Lane Mercantile, a classic, enduring commercial building where you can buy just about anything. One of the only sit-down places is Grumpy’s Restaurant on I-10, a truck-stop cafe with good meals. For cheap cold beer and dominoes find the Friendly Tavern on Penn St.
