Fredericksburg
Elevation : 1,742
Population : 8,847
The fascinating German town of Fredericksburg is one of Texas’
most celebrated destinations. It’s historic, clean, and quaint,
with wide streets lined by hundreds of shops. The community is surrounded
by charming country bed and breakfasts, wildflowers, orchards, vineyards,
beer joints, oak trees, clear streams, and hills. John Meusebach
led the town folk against the Comanches in 1846 and successfully
established a lasting peace, and ever sincethere always seems to
be something going on in and around Fredericksburg. Rustic Luckenbach
looms nearby in the woods, old German customs such as Oktoberfest,
Schuetzenfests, and Kinderfest are regularly celebrated, and quarter
horse racing often takes place at the fairgrounds, which happens
to be next door to the Lady Bird Johnson Park and the city’s
18-hole municipal golf course.

NOTES
Before you go, make your bed and breakfast reservations
at Gastehaus Schmidt (830-997-5612). For lunch
consider Ken Hall’s Barbecue Place (830-997-2353)
3 miles south of town on US 87. It’s worth stumbling through
Luckenbach (888-311-8990) for cold beer, people watching,
and the chance to hear live music under the huge oak trees. Just
10 miles northwest of town is the Hill Top Cafe (830-997-8922)
where home cooking is taken to a gourmet level, accentuated by the
atmosphere and live music. Further down the road, the 1889 Cherry
Springs Dance Hall (830-833-4902) has seen them all (even
Elvis) since it originally opened as a stop for cattle drives with
a bunkhouse in the back. Finally, another fun outdoor activity is
to find the 500 foot-high dome called Enchanted Rock,
said to be the site of human sacrifices in Indian legends.
