Driving west from Waco on US 84, the central prairies break off into the rougher landscapes of the Hill Country. The highway runs through the low hills into the Leon River Valley, straight through Gatesville and its weathered town square. Fort Gates was big in 1848, but is no longer. In the hills north of town the search still continues for the Lost Jim Bowie Mine. South of town is the main reason golfers should drive through Gatesville–the 18-hole Gatesville Country Club.

NOTES
Some say the 1897 courthouse, with its hand-cut limestone and copper-domed clock tower, is the best in Texas. Call the Chateau-Ville (254-865-2281) for lodging, and have your meals at local sit-down favorites Andy’s Restaurant or Rancher’s Restaurant. Out on Hwy. 36, there’s a vintage drive-in picture show theatre for evening fun, or you can mosey into The Horseshoe for live music and spirits.
