Georgetown
Elevation : 750
Population : 28,790
Georgetown feels old and traditional, with its traditional Victorian
square, almost 200 old homes and buildings, and the quiet campus
of 1840s Southwestern University, the oldest chartered university
in Texas. The muddy farmlands and the Hill Country ranch lands merge
here, proving its former worth as an agricultural trade center.
Lately the city has transformed due to the growth of Austin and
the influx of retired couples who crave the scenic locale and convenience
of the nearby capitol city.
For golfers interested in Georgetown, there is plenty to go around.
A few old facilities show the character of Georgetown, but the news
is being made by the rapid pace of new golf course construction,
with three high-end courses opening since 1996.

NOTES
It’s worth a call to investigate the Sun City vacation
packages for prospective residents that include deals on green fees
and good pricing on fully furnished model houses for lodging. Along
the San Gabriel River is the San Gabriel Motel,
with 19 rooms built in the 1930s. Also on the river is San Gabriel
Park, former Tonkawa Indian village and site of political debate
as well as the occasional hanging. For eats go off the beaten path
to the farming town of Walburg, TX (exit 268 of
I-35 and drive 4 miles down CR 972), where the Walburg Restaurant
(512-863-8440) serves up Bavarian specialties like bratwurst and
roasted pork loin.
