Giddings lies on the crest of a divide separating the Colorado and Brazos river basins, the ideal spot for the railroad which founded the town in 1872. Located on US 290 55 miles east of Austin and 100 miles west of Houston, Giddings offers plenty to do for the curious post-golf adventurer. Playing the 9-hole Giddings Country Club once before lunch, then once more after lunch, sets the stage for piddling around town and lazy backroads adventures into the surrounding countryside.

In Giddings, the locals go to Ernie’s Cafe for morning coffee-drinking philosophizing and the City Meat Market (979-968-3259) for barbecue at lunch. However since golf in Giddings can be quick, you may be heading to another destination, and the place we recommend is south of US 290 at Round Top, TX, where you can lounge in the quaint biergarten of the Landaus Ramsey German-American Kitchen (979-249-2080) and sample the bratwurst. Another option here is the Royers Round Top Cafe (877-866-7437), with its fried jalapeños, pork tenderloin, and unique atmosphere.
