Gonzales
Elevation : 292
Population : 6,618
Gonzales holds a special place in Texas history as the site where,
in 1835, Texans fired the first shot in the war against Mexico.
Before that the settlers struggled constantly with the Comanche
and Tonkawa Indians, and the town housed Fort Waul for the Confederacy
during the Civil War. Normalcy eventually prevailed; cotton farming
became the main force in the economy before cattle drives and railroads
made their way through town.
Gonzales has streets that were planned by the Mexican government
and named for saints. Magnificent oak and magnolia trees line these
thoroughfares today, along with over 80 historical markers telling
the tales of the revolution.
