Hamilton, set in the middle of a rich farming area, is surrounded by windmills and hay bales, with money flowing freely from hunters. About 70 miles west of Waco on the north-south US 281, this prosperous-looking town of 2,800 exudes the feel of a place that hasn’t changed since the 1950s.

On the highway into town look for Lazy T’s BBQ trailer and order a sliced-brisket sandwich. Storm’s Hamburgers (254-386-3143) is the best place for juicy home-style burgs. Pecan Creek Park meanders over 10 blocks downtown and is the best way to soak in the feel of this quaint town. For lodging there are several nice bed and breakfasts.
