The agricultural town of Hearne spreads out over railroad crossings and highway junctions among the fertile farmlands just east of the Brazos River. Centrally located for weekend explorers from Austin, Houston, and Dallas, Hearne attracts the increasing number of folks who are traveling through on Hwy. 79 looking for out-of-the-way adventures. The old Depot is restored, and there are a few old homes worth looking at, but if you find yourself with a little more time, work in a round at Hearne’s municipal golf course.

Get to know the locals and invite yourself on a late-night coon hunt, something that every discerning golfer should experience. If they don’t ask you to stay over, call the Oak Tree Inn (888-897-9647), which is clean and new. Two recommended restaurants here: The Dixie Cafe on the corner of Hwy. 6 and 79, where pork chops are popular, and the super-authentic Mexican food joint known as Ama’s.
