Kingsland
Elevation : 856
Population : 4,584
Originally named Kingsville, this small Hill Country town at the
confluence of the Colorado and Llano Rivers was popular for fishing
long before the Highland Lakes were built. Since South Texas already
had a Kingsville, the name was changed to Kingsland and the town
became a shipping center with the arrival of the railroad around
1900. The Antlers Hotel–the first to bring tourists to the
area–sprang up about the same time, While the old hotel has
changed hands many times, it’s now back on the list as an
option for lodging when visiting this scenic area for fishing, water
sports, and golf.

NOTES
Hotel suites and cabins are available at The Antlers
Hotel (800-383-0007, www.theantlers.com), a turn-of-the-century
railroad resort on Lake LBJ. Don’t forget: Llano, Marble Falls,
and Buchanan Dam are all just a short drive away for any dining
option you might be craving. Take the back roads north of Lake Buchanan
to Tow, TX and find the Hi-Line Resort
Rod & Reel Grille (915-379-1065). Another worthwhile
side trip is to the Packsaddle Mountain landmark
just off Texas 71. Traces of gold and silver have been reported
in the sands of Honey Creek, which rests at the foot of the mountain,
and this spot was also the site of an Apache Indian battle in August
1873.
