La Grange
Elevation : 272
Population : .4,215
La Grange is a beautiful old historic town that dates back to 1819,
when the legendary “Strap” Buckner set the example for
frontier machismo and led the way for further settlement of this
oak-infested- area. The town is located just north of I-10 between
San Antonio and Houston at the site where an old buffalo trail crossed
the Colorado River. Giant oaks, one of which has served as the fatal
defining moment for men in six different conflicts, line the town’s
square and streets. Historic structures, excellent restaurants and
bakeries, and cozy places to drink beer lure travelers. The famous
little whorehouse has been shut down, but golfers can still indulge
themselves, albeit while pursing a more accepted passion, at the
Frisch Auf Valley Country Club.

Notes
For good eats you can try Prause Meat Market
(979-968-3259) or Tim's Cafe on the Square (979-968-9665),
a good place to relax and ponder your round. The side trip to the
Kreische Brewery might be worthwhile–it’s
the home of stonemason and brewer Heinreich L. Kreische and Texas’
first commercial brewery. Also consider a scenic drive southwest
to FM 2436 and Hostyn, or the first roadside park on Texas 71 with
its scenic overlook of the Colorado River Valley. |
