Llano
Elevation : 1,029
Population : .3,357
Located 70 miles northwest of Austin on scenic Hwy. 71, Llano is
a beautiful Hill Country town in the heart of farm and ranch country.
The town was founded in 1855 along the spring-fed waters of the
Llano River, and became the county seat in 1856.
Llano means “plain” in Spanish, but there is nothing
ordinary about this picturesque town that calls itself the “Deer
Capital of Texas” and is surrounded by the Highland Lakes.
The entire downtown square is designated a National Historic District.
The clear, spring-fed river and the rare pink granite called Llanite
that is found here in the “Llano Uplift” all make Llano
worth adding to your list of weekend road-trip explorations.

Notes
Stay at the Badu House (915-247-4304), built in 1891 and
originally a bank, but now restored as an inn and restaurant. The
place for lunch is the famous Cooper’s Barbecue (915-247-5713),
where you can select your meat from a fire pit before taking it
inside to fix up for your liking. For morning eats there is a great
little breakfast taco shack across from the convenience store at
the intersection of Hwy 29 & 16, and the Hungry Hunter serves
sit down home-style breakfast like no-other. |
