Luling
Elevation : 419
Population : .5,279
Luling is more toned down today than it was in the old days when
it was called “the toughest town in Texas.” Rowdy cowhands
once pushed cattle from Chihuahua, Mexico to this branch of the
Southern Pacific Railroad. When oil was struck in 1922, thousands
of oilfield hands bombarded what was then a small agricultural community
of 500, booming the town to over 5,000 roughnecks. Imagine makeshift
saloons, a shooting gallery for entertainment, and temporary tent
houses filling every vacant area.
Today the signs of the hard life are gone, but almost 200 pump jacks
still remain within the city limits. Antique shopping is popular,
the town boasts barbecue to rival Luling, and the famous Watermelon
Thump is held annually. For golfers, the San Marcos River runs through
town, providing a scenic locale for the 9-hole Luling Golf Club.

Notes
Go for pork ribs at the City Market (512-875-9019),
Luling’s best spot for lunch, then take the scenic drive to
Palmetto State Park 7 miles south of town on US
183. Here on the San Marcos River, the jungle-like terrain will
startle the Hill Country traveler with an unbelievable tropical
abundance of plants like no other. Camping, fishing, hiking, and
swimming are all options. |
