Manor
Elevation : 438
Population : .1,248
Manor, which has become a suburb of Austin just 12 miles away on
US 290, is the gateway to the fertile, rolling pastures northeast
of Austin. The railroad made it through in 1871, and the town has
served as the commercial center for farmers using the railroad to
ship livestock and dairy products. For years Manor’s only
true attraction was the rustic-but-entertaining quarter horse track
known as Manor Downs. The community is growing now, however, much
to the delight of golfers who can now get an afternoon round in
at the new Shadow Glen Golf Course before hitting the track for
spirits and wagering.
Manor Golf Courses :
Notes
Well-rounded individuals must experience the thrill of
betting on the ponies at Manor Downs (512-272-5581),
despite the possible results. Even if live racing is not in season,
the eclectic “jockey club” bar that adjoins the track
is the perfect place to settle up on golf bets, grab a simple meal,
drink beer, bond with wayward degenerates, and bet on simulcast
racing. For lodging your money is more wisely spent in Austin, just
a short drive away.
