Mason

Elevation : 1,550
Population : 2,134

Driving into to Mason on a clear, warm summer morning for golf is something that every Texas golfer will remember. On the way in, the surrounding hillsides are blanketed with wildflowers and the ranchland is lined with picturesque rock fences. In town, the homes and businesses are made out of sandstone blocks from old Fort Mason, and the historic town square is surrounded by majestic pecan trees. The square is the perfect spot for morning coffee and breakfast before heading to the town’s charming city park, where you’ll find the 9-hole Comanche Creek Golf Course.

Notes
Check out the crumbling remnants of Fort Mason and the restored main building five blocks south of the courthouse. The 1880s Seaquist Home is usually open for tours that show off the 17 rooms and 14 fireplaces. The Willow Creek Cafe (915-347-6124) on the town square or Cooper’s Pit Barbecue (915-347-6897) are great lunch options. For post-round exploring, head 11 miles south on Hwy. 87 to the Llano River and Keller’s Riverside Store (915-347-0055).
