Menard
Elevation : 1,960
Population : 1,676
First established in the mid-1700s as the Spanish mission of Santa
Cruz de San Saba, Menard became an early trading post on the northwest
cattle trails. Cowhands once held their cattle in the ruins of the
old Spanish compound. Menard is a small, undiscovered town on the
western edge of the Hill Country. Primarily a ranch town that serves
the area’s sheep and wool production, the community boasts
an attractive city park on the San Saba River and a quaint 9-hole
golf course west of town.

Stuff your face at the Branding Iron BBQor go for
Tex-Mex at Ojeda’s. Hat Creek Cabins
(866-396-3399) can put you up and provide just about any kind of
outdoor activity you could want. Also at nearby Ft. McKavett,

and proximity to that unique state park. Don’t miss shuffleboard
and beers at The Fort Trading Post, a crusty old
watering hole next door to the state park. West of town on Texas

the Spanish fort dating back to 1751 that was the site of fierce
Comanche Indian attacks.
