Meridian
Elevation : 791
Population : 1,415
Bosque County, just 70 miles southwest of Dallas and due west of
Lake Whitney, marks the edge of the Hill Country with its scenic
valley walls that surround the community. The town was established
on July 4, 1854 in a log cabin, and today serves as the retail center
for the surrounding agricultural activities. With the popular Meridian
State Park, Lake Whitney, and pleasant Bosque Valley Golf Club nearby,
Meridian is a great place to get away for the weekend.

Notes
Two viable dining options in Meridian – just of the
square is Mary’s, where you can get a mean
burger, and the Tex-Mex El Jardin is always delicious.
Tour the countryside and view the limestone bluffs on the way to
lunch in Clifton, where a sausage sandwich from Bunkhouse
Bar-B-Que will tide you over while you take in the famous
Western art at the Bosque Conservatory. Back in
Meridian, check out the limestone courthouse that houses the Word
family, one of the oldest small-town political dynasties in Texas.
Up northwest near Lake Whitney is the town of Lakeside Village,
TX, which sports the roadhouse-café called Holly’s,
known for chicken-fried steak, cheap cold beers, and juke-box pool
hall fun. Also consider the Lampman’s Texaco
for provisions and supplies, because while you’re there you
can pick up a juicy home-style burger with fries to-go.
