Greenebrier Golf Club
The golf : Greenbrier dates back to the 1960s,
when the Farm and Home Administration implemented a program to help
rural communities create places for locals to play golf. The course
survived for a while, but was shut down in the 1980s due to financial
problems. After being bought at auction, the course has been gradually
improved and sold again over the years.
Known for its well-conditioned greens, the 18-hole design features
pretty central Texas scenery, wide fairways, and lakes, ponds, and
creeks that impact play on 14 holes.
While the front nine is more of an open links-style track, the back
nine has more doglegs, hills, water, and a real estate development
that has made the course much tighter.
The back nine boasts two of the more challenging holes. No. 12 is
a 529-yard par 5 that requires accuracy due to the creek crossing
the fairway and another pond. Hole 14 is the feature hole with a
creek in the fairway and a ditch toward the right. Your approach
must clear trees in the middle of the fairway from around 160 yards
out.
