New Braunfels
Elevation : 620
Population : 36,526
Established in 1845 when Prince Carl of Salms-Braunfels led a group
of German settlers fleeing the troubles of their homeland, New Braunfels
is a beautiful old town that has become the home base of frustrated
urban escapees and restless barbecue-loving river rats. There’s
something about the abundant waters of the Comal River, the good
German food, the venerable dance halls that serve cold beer, and
the laid-back lifestyle that draws you to this little piece of Texas
paradise.

Notes
Most associate New Braunfels, a veritable beer-joint dancehall
heaven on earth, with nearby Gruene Hall (www.gruenehall.com).
However, there is more to be experienced. The recently remodeled
River Road Icehouse (830-626-1335), complete with cabins
for rent, tubing on the Comal River, good food and great music,
has been hosting some pretty big Texas music names of late. The
1870 Clear Springs Cafe (830-629-3777), “The
Hill Country’s Oldest Dance Hall,” has also been restored
and hosts the occasional live concert. Another spot is the Freiheit
Country Store (830-625-9400), established in 1889 and home
to cold, cold, cold beer and great food as well as live music (www.humbletime.com).
And last but not least, Saengerhalle (830-625-4255)
is just off I-35 with its expanded 10,000-square-foot dance floor
and rustic, old-school aura.
