Pflugerville is 15 miles north of Austin on FM 1825, barely east of I-35. The town sprang up with the coming of the railroad around 1900 and maintained a population of under 1,000 residents until the community became absorbed by the expansion of Round Rock and Austin. Today this rural “commuter community” is the second-fastest-growing city in Texas with almost 18,000 residents.

There are no B&Bs or motel/hotes in Pflugerville proper, so if you must stay close, check the chains along I-35 around the FM 1825 exit. Charlie’s Steakhouse (512-251-5398) is a popular spot for lunch, as is Smokey Mo’s Bar-B-Q (512-828-4050). For nighttime meals, queso lovers will be overjoyed to find the wonderful El Rincon Mexican Restaurant (512-990-0250) Hanover Draught Haus (512-670-9617) is the place for live Texana music if you’re hanging around late. Remember though, the capital city is just down the road so high-tail it back to Austin for the nightlife.
