Rockdale
Elevation : 467
Population : 5,615
Rockdale, a clean, prosperous-looking town with wide, tree-lined
streets and a tidy little business area, is on US 79 about 45 miles
east of Round Rock. Texas’ largest lignite coal reserves border
the community, and many of the residents earn their living from
the Alcoa aluminum plant. Near the plant lies Rockdale’s no-hassle
country club, which offers the typical mixture of Hill Country oaks
and East Texas pines that you’d expect to find here on the
eastern edge of Central Texas.

Notes
If you’re in the area frequently, ask about the inexpensive
monthly membership options. The clubhouse grill is a great option
for food and drink if you’re not in the mood to tour Rockdale.
The club also offers tennis, swimming, and a jogging/walking track
that wraps around the course. For lodging in Rockdale try one of
the oldest hotels in Texas–the newly renovated Rainbow
Courts Motel (512-446-2361), complete with modern luxurious
and plenty of eclectic old character. For grub nearby call on Po
Boy BBQ (512-446-2237), or across down by the Wal-Mart
is local Tex-Mex heaven in Mariachi’s (512-446-0276).
If you really need some action ask around and find out if there’s
a Saturday night dance at the KC Hall (Knights
of Columbus).
