Rocksprings
Elevation : 2,450
Population : 2,253
Rocksprings, a rugged little sheep-and-goat town on US 377 approximately
100 miles west of San Antonio, is the seat of Edwards County, one
of the top producers of wool and mohair in the world. This is a
pass-through town, with quick amenities for gassing up and moving
on. Hunting and fishing generates 20% of the county’s income,
Del Rio and Ciudad Acuna are down the road, and the spectacular
400-foot- deep Devil’s Sinkhole is to the east.

Notes
You’ll see your limitations for adventure in town,
so head 25 miles south via Texas 55 to Barksdale. Set in the Nueces
Canyon, Indian caves dot the canyon walls, and fly-fishers can go
crazy in the numerous clear streams. Take precautions and avoid
the police, as we’ve burdened them before, being pulled over
for speeding outside of town in the early stages of a binge. It
was a close one that involved the officers driving our truck back
into town for a blow on the wonder machine. The failed test and
our subsequent freedom surely says something about their eager intentions.
