Round Rock
Elevation : 70
Population : 60,686
Round Rock is another old town that has been given new life by
the expansion of Austin. It’s popular both with commuters
and retirees, who are attracted by the slightly lower cost of living.
Located 20 miles north of the state capital, the city was established
in 1850 and named for a large round rock in the bed of Brush Creek.
Famous frontier outlaw Sam Bass and his gang wreaked havoc on stagecoaches
and banks here in the 1870s, and his life ended in a bloody gun
battle in Round Rock.
With the outstanding new Forest Creek and Teravista Golf Clubs,
as well as two more new courses currently under construction, Round
Rock’s golf scene has kept up with the growing population.

A new municipal that is in the planning stages is Southwest
Williamson County Golf Course (512-248-3238), slated to
be located at FM 1431 and CR 175. Another new construction project,
the Behrens Ranch Country Club course, is located
in the Behrens Ranch (pronounced ‘burns’) master-planned
community, a former cattle ranch that is being transformed by Masonwood
Development.
Notes
October is a good time to visit, since the weather is a
bit more reasonable and the Bluegrass & Acoustic Music
Festival is going on. Check out outlaw Sam Bass’
grave at the Round Rock Cemetery 1 mile west of
town on US 79. For meals hit the Inn at Brushy Creek
(512-255-2555), featuring unique meals in an 1850 house. Also in
the summer, don’t forget to take in a minor league baseball
game in their new first-class stadium.
