The charming town of Salado is the ideal couples get-away–a historic city loaded with antiques, art galleries, and clothing shops to keep the shopping aficionados at bay while the golfers play 27 holes at the Mill Creek golf resort. Located on I-35 halfway between Austin and Waco, Salado is within a few hours’ driving distance of many areas of the state, making it easy to drive down on a Friday afternoon or evening, in time for dinner at some of the excellent restaurants, followed by a relaxing night preparing for the weekend activities.

You’ll probably plan your trip around the resort’s offerings, which include remodeled suites and townhomes, as well as dining.. Tour the quaint shops of Main Street or check out the remains of the 1860 Salado College. Salado Creek was Texas’ first designated natural landmark. For other digs try the Ho-Jo Motel (817-947-5000) or the famous Stagecoach Inn (817-947-5111), which serves great steaks and has hosted the likes of George Custer, Robert E. Lee, Sam Houston, and Jesse James.
