San Marcos
Elevation : 581
Population : 39,491
San Marcos is perhaps the ultimate college town. It’s jammed
around I-35 with easy access to the action in Austin, New Braunfels,
and San Antonio. Blessed with the cold waters of the San Marcos
River that rise from the springs in town, the local university has
a reputation for a less-demanding curricula that allows its students
to enjoy the surroundings. Yet as much as there is to do in and
around San Marcos, the golf in the immediate vicinity is surprisingly
lacking for a town of 40,000 that is known for its recreational
opportunities.

Notes
Drive through the historic oak-lined streets, particularly
Belvin St., to see the magnificent old 19th-century homes. Around
the town square you’ll find new bars and restaurants for the
college scene, but the most unique side trip options are outside
of town, especially the scenic drive down the Devil’s
Backbone – take RM 12 northwest to RM 32 along the
winding roads and ridges. Consider the side trip to Uhland,
TX and the 1893 Club 21 Dance Hall for
festivities, or to Hunter, TX and Riley’s
Tavern (512-392-3132) “Texas’ First Tavern
After Prohibition.”
