Formerly known as Rebecca Creek Golf Club, then Rayner Ranch, Hawk Golf Club, Corazon de Rebecca Creek is a back-to-basics country course that has improved dramatically since the new ownership took over. The tee boxes have been redesigned and resodded, and several greens have been improved. New cart paths have been installed and the clubhouse and pro shop have been totally renovated.

Located near Rebecca Creek and Canyon Lake, the course is surprisingly void of water and bunkers, but is tight enough to cause problems if you’re spraying the ball. The layout is carved out of the Hill Country, and the rolling fairways are lined by oak trees. Slicers will fair well here, since there always seems to be room for error to the right.

No. 3 is the rated the most difficult, a 552-yard dogleg left par 5, but the 18th is probably more challenging: a long par 4 with a long iron or fairway wood approach to a green fronted by a large body of water.

The staff’s attitude reflects the club’s bright future. Everyone is friendly, and you’ll always see the beverage cart rolling around the course. For the price, this out-of-the way course is definitely worth a golf road trip.

Getting there : From Hwy. 281 north, look for the large golf ball on the side of the highway. Turn right on Rebecca Creek Rd. and the course is 3 miles away.

A fun and not to tuff of a course to tame. Nice change of pace from your bigger city courses. Take a little drive and give it a try!

Average is best I can say. The new owner removed all sand hazards and did not develop the promised water (creek) hazard on #2 and 10. Barring landing 100 yds. left of the #1 green, the only water in play is a small pond right of the #18 green.

The greens, and the rest of the course, suffered hugely during the '09 drought, recovered in '10. Once again the greens have deteriorated. Bare spots, mold/fungus and bumpy. Don't expect the course greens to roll like the practice green.

I play because the course is close, but am going elsewhere tomorrow.
