Spring Branch
Elevation : 1,115
Population : 200
The small community of Spring Branch, named for the spring that
flows into the nearby Guadalupe River, is located just west of US
281due north of San Antonio. Only 25 folks made Spring Branch home
until Canyon Dam gave life to the lake just east of town, booming
this town in the hills of Comal County to a several hundred residents.
Since this is less than 30 minutes from downtown San Antonio, the
golf facilities here are often associated with the Alamo City. Make
no mistake about it though–this scenic region of the Hill
Country, while offering the quality of big-city golf, is much more
serene, peaceful, and remote than anything in town.

Notes
If you can’t strum up action in the bars, restaurants,
and marinas around Canyon Lake, head to Bulverde and find Specht’s
Store Restaurant and Saloon (830-980-7121) to order onion rings,
catfish filets, and live music. Other options are to head north
on US 281 to Blanco, TX and the Blanco Bowling Club Café
(830-833-4416), where you can chain smoke, drink beer, bowl, and
eat chicken-fried steak with the area farmers and ranchers., or
Hit Oso’s Mexican Grill & Cantina (830-833-1304)in Blanco’s
historic Square. Tex-Mex is their specialty, and you’ll want
the Huevos de Oso (bear balls), which is a concoction of sopapillas,
honey, ice cream, and pecans.
