Temple

Elevation : 736
Population : 49,427

This designated “Wildflower Capital of Texas” is a busy, rapidly growing city that has spread out around a compact business district. In the early years after the railroad came through town, Temple was a rough town dotted with saloons and brothels. Respectability eventually arrived with the help of citizens such as Dr. A.C. Scott, who was chief surgeon of the hospital from 1892 to 1940. With the help of his partner, Dr. R.R. White, the two helped Temple on its way to becoming what is now one of the leading medical centers in the nation.
The metro area that includes Temple, Belton, and Killeen is one of the fastest growing in America, and Temple itself offers two public golf courses, highlighted by the outstanding Sammons Park Golf Course, and one private facility, the scenic Wildflower Country Club.

Notes
After golf, go for chicken-fried steak at the Bluebonnet Cafe (254-773-6644), a
Temple institution that’s famous for its good eats. Also consider the Classic Cafe (254-774-8701), set in a historic office building. There’s lodging to be had at the Holiday Inn and tons of the standard traditional guidebook recommendations like city parks, museums, etc., to tour if you’re dying to roam around Temple.
