Waco
Elevation : 427
Population : 108,272
While it isn’t the most popular vacation destination in Texas,
Waco offers more than you might know from just speeding through
on your way to Austin or Dallas. The town known for its five “Cs”–cattle,
cotton, corn, collegians, and culture–is in the middle of
a rich agricultural region of the Brazos River Valley that is loaded
with outstanding golf courses.
President George W. Bush would know–he parks his plane at
the former Connally Air Force Base for excursions to his ranch in
Crawford, and he’s been lured to the links of Waco more than
once. His course of choice recently has been the Ridgewood Country
Club. If he wanted to play with the common man, the newly opened
Bear Ridge or the Cottonwood Creek municipal would stand out among
Waco’s six regulation public courses.

Notes
Compare how you measure up to the machismos of Texas at
the Texas Ranger Museum. For eats, George’s
(254-753-1421) is the place for fathers and sons to experience male
bonding by partaking in giant-sized globes of beer and gazing at
Baylor’s beautiful co-eds. The Lone Star Tavern
(254-799-0918) is one of the best steakhouses in Texas, and the
Elite Cafe (254-754-4941) specializes in chicken-fried
steak. Weekend golf orgy-goers can go upscale at the Waco
Hilton (254-754-8484), or more toned down at the Old
Main Lodge (254-753-0316) near campus.
