Wimberley
Elevation : 427
Population : 108,272
While it isn’t the most popular vacation destination in Texas,
Wimberley offers more than you might know from just speeding through
on your way to Austin or Dallas. The town known for its five “Cs”–cattle,
cotton, corn, collegians, and culture–is in the middle of
a rich agricultural region of the Brazos River Valley that is loaded
with outstanding golf courses.
President George W. Bush would know–he parks his plane at
the former Connally Air Force Base for excursions to his ranch in
Crawford, and he’s been lured to the links of Wimberley more
than once. His course of choice recently has been the Ridgewood
Country Club. If he wanted to play with the common man, the newly
opened Bear Ridge or the Cottonwood Creek municipal would stand
out among Wimberley’s six regulation public courses.

Notes
Shop away in this charming town–the Mrs. will surely
be proud to find herself here. Let her indulge herself and then
take her to the famous Cypress Creek Cafe for a
meal and possibly a show. Do your homework for the appropriate B&B
accommodations, as there are many. One option is the 7A Ranch
Resort (512-847-2517) with its rustic cabins and river
frontage with fishing and swimming. The back roads are stunning,
and drives in any direction will reward the traveler with impressive
views of the Hill Country. Make the drive to Fischer, TX
and find the 1875 Fischer Hall (210-935-4800),
with its hand-hewn beams and rafters, handset 9-pin bowling alley,
cold beer, and live music.
