Bonham
Elevation : 568
Population : 7,306
Turn right on US 82 just before you get to Oklahoma and you’ll
run into Bonham, tree-shaded and old, known for its courthouse square
statue of Alamo hero James Bonham and as the home of “Mr.
Sam” Rayburn, the longtime dean of the US Congress. This area
of Blackland Prairie south of the Red River has been home to one
of Texas’ oldest courses, the Bonham Country Club, but has
recently added a spectacular new track called Legacy Ridge.

Notes
The Carlton House B&B (903-583-2779)
is here, but Bonham wouldn’t be Bonham unless you could crash
at a place called Granny Lou’s (800-997-7912).
This area is unfortunately overlooked by DFW-ites seeking outdoor
backroad adventures. Northeast are the Caddo National Grasslands
and just south there’s Bonham State Park,
both great places to fish, camp, and enjoy the outdoors. Also 13
miles northwest find the ghost town of Old Warren,
the first Fannin County seat. We’ll elaborate here for those
who like to eat–try the popular Feed Mill Restaurant
(903-961-2711), west on US 82, where the chicken-fried steak is
the specialty. For lunch on the square hit The Green Onion
(555-555-5555) or Hickory BBQ (555-555-5555).
JJC’s (555-555-5555) is across from Granny Lou’s
and serves pasta specialties. And if you have margarita cravings,
find Rolando’s (555-555-5555) by the Days
Inn.
