Cleburne
Elevation : 764
Population : 25,033
From the DFW area, you’ll pass through Cleburne on your way
to the heart of Texas. The seat of Johnson County, the city is named
after Confederate General Pat Cleburne and is home to two adequate
small-town courses. On the outskirts, the town shows its dirty,
rural roots, with random businesses scattered along the highway.
Downtown has some character, with its historic, pristine homes on
Prairie and North Anglin streets. In addition to the agriculture,
the city is home to the state’s largest railroad construction
and repair industry.

Notes
The Anglin Rose B&B (817-641-7433)
is one of a few choices for a night’s stay, and the locals
will point you towards the Lone Star Cafe (817-556-3098)
for a place to eat. The chamber of commerce might point you to the
Layland Museum, which is interesting because of
its Indian artifacts and details on early Texana, as well as the
Johnson County Courthouse, which sports an ornate,
stained-glass dome. The road-trip types might be interested in the
ghost town sites that dot the countryside around
town, one of which is 5 miles northwest and was the original county
seat. |
