The former Nolan River Country Club, once run by legendary pro Ben Hogan, is now open to the public, boasting pesky Buffalo Creek that winds through the layout on this beautiful, quiet, country course. Leon Howard built this track in the 1960s when Nolan River moved from its old location. His design features no bunkers, elevated greens, and water in play on 10 holes.
The 4th hole is famous on the front. Sneaky because of the small pond looming right of the fairway and hidden off the tee, this one goes 513 yards with a difficult approach that must thread two huge trees and carry the creek.
Two par 3s stand out: No. 8, which carries the creek, and the signature 13th, which plays 146 yards over water, with trouble behind the green.
The most difficult par 4 is No. 14, playing 418 yards and usually requiring a lay-up behind the creek–the approach over water is longer than you’d like.
Getting there : From Hwy. 67 west, travel to Nolan River Rd. Turn left and the course is 3 miles away.
