Corsicana

Elevation : 411
Population : 23,124

Headed toward Houston from Dallas on I-45, you’ll run into Corsicana about an hour down the road. The seat and largest town of Navarro County, the town dates back to 1848 when Texas Revolution hero Antonio Navarro suggested the name in honor of his parents’ hometown on the island of Corsica.

The traveling golfer has two options in this industrious town of the Northern blacklands–the 1914 country club, which has the proud distinction of being designed by the irreverent A.W. Tillinghast, and the more laid-back 9-hole Oak Trail Golf Club.

Notes
The Collin Street Bakery (903-872-8111) has been around for over 100 years, and Roy’s Cafe (903-874-6791) is the local favorite for lunch. It’s worth a quick drive around town to see the old, historic homes. For lodging, The Magnolia House (903-872-2577) or The Wicklow Inn (903-872-7311) offer excellent B&B options.
