The great game of golf was blessed upon Crandall in 1995 when Dick Phelps was hired to build the town’s municipal track. With a population of barely 3,000 folks, Crandall is the smallest Texas town with its own municipally owned golf course.
Phelps did Crandall right with his 7,238-yard design. Far from the basic courses that typically dot Texas’ small towns, this one has some bite, with plenty of trees, water, and sand, as well as first-class bent-grass greens. In fact, this course is legitimate enough to bring golfers in droves from the Dallas area, with over 80% of the course’s revenue coming from visiting golfers. Crandall used to be known as a speed trap, now it’s known for its golf.
Two holes stand out, one on each side. The signature is the 581-yard par 5, which doglegs left with a creek on the right. The fairway is spotted with bunkers, and the small green is a difficult target because it is surrounded by trees and water. On the back, No. 15 goes 210 yards over water–it can be difficult to hold a shot on the two-tiered green because it plays with the prevailing wind.
Getting there : Take Hwy. 175 west towards Dallas for 9 miles. Exit FM 148 and turn left. Stay to the right and look for the driveway to the course.
