Elevation : 1,097
Population : 5,284
Pre-Civil War Decatur, the seat of Wise County, is on Hwy. 81 on
the way to Wichita Falls from Fort Worth, on the edge of the Grand
Prairies region that overlooks the Cross Timbers. Gamblers have
no doubt heard the phrase “eighter from Decatur,” supposedly
coined here when the railroad made its way through town in the 1880s.
The town prospered as a shipping point, and has hung on over the
years and even managed a bit of growth since some of its residents
commute into Fort Worth to earn their living. These folks get their
golf in at the 9-hole Decatur Golf & Country Club, where you
can work in a quick round if you’re headed towards the Indian
territory.

Notes
Up the road on US 81 in Alvord, TX is Brushy Creek
Vineyards (940-427-4747), where the tasting room offers
samples of the local moonshine. B&B options are The
Heritage House (940-627-3736), Grasslands Bed &
Barn (940-627-7176) out on the LBJ National Grassslands.
By the railroad tracks there’s the Whistle Stop Cafe
(555-555-5555) or find Yesterday’s Texas
(940-627-5866) on 287, a nice 1950s-style joint. Beer drinkers need
to eat at the Cow Camp Steakhouse (627-7741), where
the food is outstanding, or the more lively Frilly’s
(940-626-1424), where the locals go to watch sporting events. |
