Denison

Elevation : 767
Population : 22,170

Denison is a welcome spot to stop off and plan your adventures on Lake Texoma. Located on US 75 just south of the Oklahoma border, it has been called “The Gateway City” because of the amenities it provides for those traveling south into Texas. While Denison is a clean, vibrant town that has been designated a Texas Main Street City, it’s titillating to imagine its rugged history as a railroad tent city inhabited by gamblers, whores, and places of ill-repute.

Notes
Main Street in historic downtown Denison has become a little artists’ mecca, with galleries popping up in the quaint shops that line the neat-looking streets. Nearby the Katy Depot, the old railroad house that helped spur the town’s growth, houses restaurants, shops, and local businesses. Lake Texoma is just up the road, one of the great lakes of Texas with all sorts of recreational opportunities. The best places to eat are the Cotton Patch Cafe (903-464-0067) on US 75, or the Railhead Steak House & Club (903-463-5289) on S. Austin.
