Glen Garden Golf & Country Club

The golf : Glen Garden is old-school--a Texas classic where Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan learned the game as caddies back in the 1920s. One of Texas’ oldest golf facilities, the old clubhouse that was built in 1912 has been replaced with a new $1.2 million facility complete with nostalgic memorabilia gracing the walls.
The Tom Bendelow-designed course offers numerous opportunities for birdie, with generous fairways that are friendly to the driver and well-conditioned greens of average speed that putt true. The layout ends with a strange twist, with four of the final five holes as par 3s. Nos. 14 and 15 are both over 200 yards, and No. 17 is the only easy par. No. 15 stands out among the group because of its blind shot to an elevated green.

Fortunately, the public can play on Mondays during the prime golf months of April to September.

In terms of nostalgia, imagine a 1927 Caddyshack-like Bushwood Caddy Tournament, but replace Denunzio and Danny with Hogan and Nelson. They say Nelson drained a long putt on the final hole to beet Hogan by one, and it’s at least mildly humorous to imagine the crowd screaming “M..M…MISS IT!!!” as the lanky Nelson buried the clutch putt for the win.

Getting there : From I-35 south, exit Berry St. and head east to Glen Garden Dr. Turn south on Glen Garden and the course is on the right.
