Garland, another DFW bedroom community that covers the northeastern part of clustered Dallas County, is home to Duck Creek and the neighbor of Lake Ray Hubbard to the east. Duck Creek served as a station on the railroad and the community was once on its way to becoming a major shipping point for onions. The golf here consists of two private country clubs: an impressive city-owned facility with 63 holes and a quaint par 3 course.

Try the Dry Dock (972-226-7440) on Marina Dr. for the lounge-bar type atmosphere. On Jupiter Rd. the old-school Griff’s Hamburgers (972-530-7886) is popular. On Main St. there’s Big Man’s East Texas (972-276-6128) which serves damn good barbecue, and up the road in Sachse, TX you’ll find Lone Star Barbecue (972-495-4929).
