Around 1950, Mesquite sported 1,700 folks and the town’s phones still required the Andy Griffith-style ring operator to push calls through. Then Big D boomed and the interstates opened, spurring growth at a ridiculous rate. Now the town has over 120,000 folks and is still growing. Surprisingly for such a substantial community, Mesquite offers the bare minimum in terms of golf–a basic 18-hole municipal and two nice par 3 tracks.

During the summer, the world-famous Mesquite Championship Rodeo (800-833-9339) is big doins in these parts, with live shows on the weekends and all sorts of cowboy activities. Eastwind BBQ (972-222-2514) on Lawson Rd. is popular with the locals, and Top Cat BBQ (972-270-8870) offers another non-chain barbecue option. And there is an El Fenix (972-279-8900) here for traditional Tex-Mex fares. Stacks Burger House (972-270-6255) serves the best burger in Mesquite, but Griff’s Hamburgers (972-288-6063) is a popular rival. And as is typical for the burbs, you’ll have a slew of options up and down the main highways when it comes to lodging. The Hampton Inn & Suites (972-329-3100) and the Country Inn & Suites (972-216-7460) are just a few of the dozens.
