The Shores Country Club

The golf : Laid out along the wind-swept shores of Lake Ray Hubbard, The Shores was designed in the late 1970s by Leon Howard, who served up his typical 7,000-yard-plus layout. Howard’s design involves the lake on five holes, as well as water on another seven. With its lack of trees, the main challenges are the water and the wind off the lake. Tees ranging from 5,200 to 7,100 yards allow an enjoyable day for any type of golfer.
Two holes stand out on the back nine, which is the most exciting since it rolls along the edge of the lake. No. 15 plays almost 600 yards from the tips and involves water on both the tee shot and approach. This one is especially difficult into the wind.
No. 18 is a 452-yard par 4, again with water in play off the tee and on the approach. The lake that cuts into the fairway squeezes the landing area, and a fairway bunker guards the corner of the slight dogleg left. The uphill approach involves carrying the water and hitting an accurate long iron or wood, something we’re not always in the mood for at the end of a long round.
Other notes: Adjacent to the driving range there are three par 3 holes for practice.
