Ballinger

Elevation : 1,637
Population : 4,003

Ballinger began in 1886 where the Colorado River and Elm Creek converge, and surprisingly, became a hot spot that attracted crowds of drifters and gamblers who came to partake in the town’s nine saloons and gambling halls. The nearby farms and ranches produce cotton, grain, sheep, cattle, and oil. Today Ballinger, the main shipping and distribution point for Runnels County, features restored historical homes and buildings, antique stores, a thriving downtown district, and the Ballinger Country Club for golfers traveling through the area.

Notes
Be here in August for the mid-month Open Bass Tournament at Lake O.H. Ivie 25 miles southwest of Ballinger. In the cotton fields between Ballinger and San Angelo you’ll find the Lowake Steak House (915-442-3201), where famous folks and locals inhale T-bones. There are four local motels if you need to stay.
