Amarillo
Elevation : 3,676
Population : 176,066
The cowboy town of Amarillo dates back to 1887, when railroading
and cattle dominated the economy. Once the fencing of ranges began,
the town became the world’s leading cattle shipping market,
and wheat farmers turned Amarillo into a major wheat belt. Here
in the northern reaches of the Texas Panhandle, the skies are bluer
and the air is pristine–cleaner than any in the nation for
a city of its size.
Amarillo has a unique Western heritage, excellent shopping, famous
dining, and over 100 holes of quality public golf without the big-city
crowds.
